World Book Day was full of excitement in Year 1 as the children dived into the world of Mad About Minibeasts! They loved exploring the vibrant illustrations and learning fascinating facts about all sorts of tiny creatures. Inspired by the book, they put their thinking caps on and created their own minibeast riddles, challenging their friends to guess which insect or creepy-crawly they were describing.
The creativity didn’t stop there! The children also made beautiful coffee filter butterflies, using bright colours to bring their winged creations to life. It was a fantastic way to combine art with their love for books.
To end the day in the best way possible, they snuggled up for a cosy reading session, sipping on delicious chocolate milkshakes while sharing their favourite stories. It was a magical celebration of books, creativity and the joy of reading!

Design Technology - Puppets

As part of their Design Technology learning, Year 1 children recently embarked on an exciting project: creating their very own felt hand puppets! This hands-on activity allowed them to explore their creativity, refine their skills and learn the basics of sewing—all while having lots of fun!
First, the children were tasked with designing their puppets. They carefully planned out their ideas, choosing colours and features that would make their puppets unique. Once their designs were ready, it was time to begin the sewing process.
At first, the sewing proved to be a bit tricky, as many of the children had never sewn before. But with determination and patience, they refined their sewing techniques. They practiced stitching, threading needles and attaching felt pieces together, all while supporting and encouraging one another.
Through hard work and persistence, the children successfully created their hand puppets! Each one was different, with its own special personality. From farm animals to domestic pets, the children’s designs truly came to life in the form of their puppets.
This project was a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop both their practical skills and their creativity. It was amazing to see them so proud of the finished results—each puppet a reflection of their effort and imagination.
Well done, Year 1! You’ve shown incredible perseverance and creativity in making your hand puppets. We can’t wait to see all the stories you’ll create with them! 🎭✨

Year 1 have been working incredibly hard this year and their efforts have truly paid off! The class has been earning Wellgate Stars stickers and both classes completed their THIRD set of STARS! After achieving all of their stars, the children were treated to a very special reward—a Bubble Party!
The air was filled with laughter as the children chased and popped bubbles of all sizes. It was a magical moment that allowed them to relax and enjoy the results of their hard work.
But that wasn’t all! After the bubble-filled fun, the children settled in to watch a film with some tasty snacks. It was the perfect way to wind down and enjoy the rewards of their effort, teamwork, and determination.
This bubble party was a reminder that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s always great to take a moment to celebrate accomplishments, big and small, and to remind the children that their perseverance pays off in exciting ways!
Well done, Year 1! You all truly earned this fantastic reward! Keep up the great work! 🌟🎉

Map Explorers!

Year 1 have been on an exciting journey of discovery in their recent Geography unit, all about maps! Their learning was guided by the key enquiry question: Why do maps have a key?
The children started by exploring what maps are and why they are important. They looked at a variety of maps, learning how they help us find our way and understand different places. They then moved on to studying map keys, discussing how symbols are used to represent different features.
To deepen their understanding, the children explored Ordnance Survey symbols, identifying key landmarks and features that appear on real-world maps. Inspired by this, they then had the opportunity to get creative! They designed and drew their own maps, thinking carefully about what to include and how to represent different locations. Finally, they created their very own map keys, using their own symbols to help others understand their maps.
Well done, Year 1! You have shown fantastic geographical skills and creativity throughout this topic. Where will your map-reading adventures take you next?

Year 1 have been working incredibly hard in Maths, exploring the fascinating world of tetromino and pentomino arrangements! The children have been investigating different ways to arrange these shapes and discovering how many possible formations they can create. They have also been testing whether their shapes stay the same when flipped or rotated – a great way to develop their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.
Alongside this, the children have been using four cubes to construct 3D models, exploring all the different ways they can be arranged. This hands-on learning has encouraged them to think critically and work systematically to find all possible solutions.
Can you think of all the different ways four cubes could be combined to make a 3D shape? Why not have a go and see how many you can find?
Well done, Year 1 – your hard work and curiosity in Maths is truly impressive!

Recently, the children have been learning how to throw underarm at a target. They practised this skill by aiming beanbags from a distance into a hoop, focusing on their technique and accuracy. To challenge themselves further, they embedded this skill within a series of fun and engaging activities, helping to refine their coordination and control.
It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they develop their physical skills while also learning the importance of teamwork and perseverance. Well done, Year 1!
