Anti-Bullying at Wellgate

Picture
Wellgate Primary School is opposed to bullying and will not tolerate it. We aim to develop a culture of respect and understanding where bullying can be acknowledged and dealt with in a way that is seen by all to be fair and reasonable.

Our responsibilities towards the prevention of bullying:
  • Building time to raise discussions on issues relating to bullying and why people bully and are bullied.
  • Build time within the curriculum to promote and enhance awareness, understanding and acceptance between cultural groups.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate the breadth of experience and intellectual resources that people from diverse backgrounds bring to the life of the school.
  • Develop children’s social skills generally within the class.
  • Teach and encourage confidence-building and assertiveness.
  • Set a good example in and around school – modelling how to speak to others respectfully, being aware of the language and tone used.
  • Be aware and alert to signs of bullying.
  • Ensure e-safety is taught within school and children are encouraged to share any concerns they have online.

What is bullying?

The repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can be physical, verbal or psychological. It can happen face-to-face or online  - Anti Bullying Alliance

Types of bullying:

There are different types of bullying that can take place. These can include but are not limited to:
  • Physical - hitting, kicking, pushing, biting
  • Verbal - name calling, teasing, belittling
  • Emotional - isolating others, excluding, threatening gestures
  • Online/Cyber - nasty messages, posting on social media, sharing photographs

Further examples can be found in the school's Anti-Bullying Policy

What can you do if you're being bullied?

We want everybody to feel confident to report bullying whenever and wherever it happens and get the help they need to feel safe again. If someone is bullying you, it important to remember that is not your fault and there are people that can help you. Tell someone you trust, giving them as many facts as you can (Who? Where? What? Why? When? How?). You can tell any trusted adult. In school, this could be:
  • Mrs Egginton
  • Mrs Richardson
  • Miss Sibbick
  • Your Class Teacher

If you have seen bullying happen (Bystander)...

It is really important that you follow the same process and tell a trusted adult. Staying quiet can mean the ringleader has more power and they might continue to be unkind to others. Remember, you can speak face to face with your trusted adult in school or use one of the drop boxes to report it.

Anti-Bullying Ambassadors

We have a set of Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who work together alongside Miss Nowshirvani in school. They are thee to support at playtimes by being an encouraging voice to anyone who needs to SPEAK OUT. You will spot an Ambassador as they will be wearing an yellow badge.
So far, they have:
  • Introduced themselves in assemblies
  • Supported the creation of the whole school pledge
  • Supported the creation of the information leaflet
  • Developed their own guide for their important role

Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are:
  • Isla & Charlotte
  • Oscar & Cassandra
  • Millie & Nylah
  • Isabella & Anthony
  • Marley

Parents as Partners

We ask that parents support their child and school by:
*Looking out for signs of distress or unusual behaviour.
*Advising your child to report any bullying to their class teacher.
*Advising your child not to retaliate violently to any forms of bullying.
*Keep a written record of any reported instances of bullying.
*Inform the school of any suspected bullying, even if your child is not involved.
*Co-operate with the school if your child is accused of bullying and try to ascertain the truth.
*Attend any meeting required and participate in any planned actions to resolve issues.
