We believe that having a proactive School Council is the perfect opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. We respect and value the ideas, thoughts and opinions of our children and while it may not always be possible or practical to do everything they suggest, we appreciate the amazing ideas the children do have. Where possible, we put these ideas and suggestions in place. The School Council benefits our whole school community including all our pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made within school. Being a School Councillor helps to develop many important life-long skills that support our school ethos; Learning for Life. The role supports the development of their confidence, communication skills, high level thinking and many other essential life skills. It is paramount that we enable pupils with positive attitudes to exert a positive influence.
At Wellgate Primary School, we have a very proactive School Council. All classes from Year 2 to Year 6 hold sessions for the children to elect themselves as class School Council members. After hearing their class mates deliver their comprehensive manifesto speeches, the class take part in a confidential voting process to decide their new class School Council member. This takes place at the beginning of each academic year.
All representatives attend regular School Council meetings to represent their fellow classmates. The School Council are thoroughly integrated into whole school decision making and meet regularly to discuss new and upcoming items. After each meeting, teachers are informed of the items discussed and School Council members will feedback to their classes. Where necessary, they will collect the ideas and views of their class to take back to the next meeting.
