Easter Celebrations

27/3/2026

What a busy week we’ve had in Reception!
Alongside our exciting trip to the Emergency Services Museum, we have been exploring Easter traditions. The children enjoyed retelling the Easter story using props, helping them remember the most important parts. They also learned about Jesus and the kind things he did.
Today, we tasted hot cross buns—although not everyone was a fan! The children used what they have learned to to explain why there is a cross on top.
We ended the week with an egg-citing egg hunt in the playground. The children used their counting skills to make sure everyone had an equal number of treats.
Have a lovely break, everyone

Emergency Services Museum

What a fantastic day our Reception children have had on their visit to the Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield! Throughout the day, they had the opportunity to explore real emergency vehicles, try on uniforms, and take part in hands-on activities that brought their learning to life.

They discovered how the police help to keep people safe, solve problems, and support the community. The children particularly enjoyed seeing a real life prison cell - although the food didn't look very nice!
When exploring the work of firefighters, the children learned about fire safety, the importance of acting quickly in an emergency, and how firefighters use their equipment to put out fires and rescue people. Seeing the fire engines up close was definitely a highlight!

The visit also helped the children understand the vital role of the ambulance service. They found out how paramedics care for people who are hurt or unwell and how they respond quickly to emergencies.

Throughout the day, the children showed excellent listening, enthusiasm, and behaviour. We are so proud of how they represented our school and how polite and engaged they were in their learning. They were real Wellgate Stars! A huge thank you goes to all the parents who came to help out - we couldn't have done it without you.

We were delighted to welcome one of our Reception parents, who is a dentist, into school to talk to the children about oral hygiene.
The children enjoyed learning how to take care of their teeth and watched a video about visiting the dentist, helping them understand what to expect. We also discussed the importance of brushing regularly and keeping our teeth healthy. Each child received a goodie bag to take home, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a timer to support their brushing routine. A big thank you to our parent volunteer for such an informative and engaging visit!

Today we had lots of fun learning all about Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day! The highlight of the day was our pancake tasting activity. The children had the chance to try pancakes with a range of different toppings, including sweet and fruity choices. We talked about how the pancakes tasted and used describing words like sweet, sour, and sticky! We had a fantastic Pancake Day full of learning, fun, and very sticky fingers!

This week in Reception, the children have been enjoying learning about Arctic and Antarctic animals as part of their understanding of the world. The topic has sparked lots of curiosity and discussion, as children explored cold, icy environments and the animals that live there. The children had the opportunity to create their own habitats for the Polar animals.

Over the last few weeks, the children have been learning all about how animals survive during winter. We explored new vocabulary such as hibernate, migrate, shelter and food, and discussed how different animals stay warm and safe when the weather turns cold. As part of our learning, the children visited the Wild Wood, where they worked together to build shelters for woodland creatures using natural materials. They showed fantastic creativity and teamwork, carefully considering how animals need protection from the cold. It was wonderful to see how engaged and excited the children were while learning about caring for animals in winter.

Exploring Ice...

This week in Reception, the children have been exploring frost and ice like little scientists! They built on their learning from our Winter Walk last week, touched ice, and talked about how it feels cold, slippery, and solid. They experimented with melting ice using warm hands, water, and salt.  It has been fabulous to see them describe what happens to water when it freezes and melts while having lots of hands-on fun in the classroom!

Wellgate in Winter

This week, our Reception children enjoyed a Winter Walk, exploring the changes that happen outdoors during the coldest season of the year. Wrapped up warm in coats, hats, and gloves, the children were ready to spot the signs of winter all around them. As we walked, the children noticed bare trees, crisp air, and the sparkle of frost on leaves and grass. We even saw Mr Slater gritting the car park to keep us safe!  We talked about why some trees lose their leaves in winter, and wondered how the ducks would stay warm when their pond was frozen. The children used vocabulary such as cold, ice, frost, freeze, and winter sun as they described what they could see and feel.

🎄 FS2 Christmas Party Fun! 🎄
Our FS2 children had a wonderful time celebrating at our Christmas party!
The classroom was filled with excitement, laughter, and lots of festive cheer. The children enjoyed playing fun party games such as Pass the Parcel, Musical Statues, and Christmas Corners.
There was also plenty of time for dancing with friends. It was lovely to see the children laughing, sharing, and celebrating with their classmates.
To finish off our party, the children enjoyed some yummy party food, which was a big hit and a perfect way to end the celebrations.🎅✨

Our Reception children were amazing in their nativity, A Very Special Birthday, today. They retold the Christmas Story with confidence, excitement and joy. We are so proud of how hard they had worked to prepare, and everyone played their part beautifully. It was a joy to watch them shine on stage, and we hope all their families enjoyed their fantastic performance.
We would especially like to thank our wonderful Year 6 Narrators for helping us tell the story—what true Wellgate Stars you are!
