Year 1 have been on an exciting journey of discovery in their recent Geography unit, all about maps! Their learning was guided by the key enquiry question: Why do maps have a key?
The children started by exploring what maps are and why they are important. They looked at a variety of maps, learning how they help us find our way and understand different places. They then moved on to studying map keys, discussing how symbols are used to represent different features. To deepen their understanding, the children explored Ordnance Survey symbols, identifying key landmarks and features that appear on real-world maps. Inspired by this, they then had the opportunity to get creative! They designed and drew their own maps, thinking carefully about what to include and how to represent different locations. Finally, they created their very own map keys, using their own symbols to help others understand their maps. Well done, Year 1! You have shown fantastic geographical skills and creativity throughout this topic. Where will your map-reading adventures take you next?
