At Wellgate Primary School, our ambition is for every child to become a confident, increasingly independent writer who can communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.
As part of Every Child Matters Academy Trust, we follow a carefully prioritised and progressive approach to writing which recognises that becoming a successful writer is complex. Children need ideas and language to communicate, but they also need increasingly automatic handwriting, spelling and transcription skills so that these do not become barriers to composition.
Our teaching therefore develops the closely connected elements of oracy, composition, handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation progressively from Nursery to Year 6.
Writing does not begin with a blank piece of paper. It begins with talk, stories, experiences, vocabulary, movement, mark making and ideas. Across the school, children are explicitly taught the knowledge and skills they need before being supported to rehearse, practise, apply and ultimately use these skills with increasing independence.

The roots are the foundations: talk, vocabulary, stories, physical development, phonics, spelling, handwriting, sentence construction and grammar.
Through careful modelling, explicit teaching, rehearsal, feedback and repeated practice, these foundations become increasingly secure.
The wings are what those foundations allow children to do: communicate, imagine, explain, persuade, entertain, inform and express themselves with confidence.
From a child's first meaningful mark in Nursery to a carefully crafted piece of independent writing in Year 6, our ambition remains the same:
to help every child find their voice and become a writer.
