At Wellgate Primary School, the intent of our PSHEE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum that is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child, so that they know more, remember more which in turn, will support them to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, healthy, responsible citizens of society. Due to this, PSHEE is embedded in all that we do.
At Wellgate, children’s wellbeing, happiness and safety are our first priority, and PSHEE is the key vehicle through which we share this with children. We regard PSHEE as an important, integral component of the whole curriculum; it is central to our approach and at the core of our ethos. Our curriculum helps the children to understand how they are developing personally and socially as well as promoting their social, mental and physical fitness. Children learn how to live their ‘One Life’ well. They will be able to develop the ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Through our discreet One Life lessons as well as wider cross curricular approach to teaching PSHEE, children are taught how to keep themselves safe, socially, physically and mentally resulting in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, which enables children to access the wider curriculum. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through many opportunities that are given to them.
One Life
Our PSHEE Curriculum is taught through our programme following a deliberately planned and carefully sequenced curriculum which goes above and beyond the Department for Education's statutory guidance.
The clear end goal of the programme is to ensure that all pupils know how to live a healthy, safe and happy life and know to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.
At the heart of One Life is building a strong mental, physical and social fitness. Each statutory requirement has been broken down into age-appropriate content which has been sequenced and connected to ensure that children know more and do better.
Our One Life Fitness Challenges
Traffic Lights
Through the One Life Curriculum, children are taught to understand the warning signs of their Mental, Social and Physical Fitness. This is linked to a traffic light system to support the children to identify whether they are staying fit within these three key elements of their life.
Morning Routine
To ensure our children arrive at school and they are happy and settled to learn, every class completes a morning routine creating a sense of belonging and calm.
