PHSCE (Personal, health, social and citizenship education)

During the three key stages at Wellgate the children are given experience of a variety of issues relating to their wider world and beyond. There are many cases where the curriculum closely links to that of science.

Children in the Foundation Stage are taught the importance of hygiene and hand washing, nutrition and labelling their bodies.

Children in years 2, 4 and 6 are taught sex and relationships education involving the importance of a stable relationship as well as the key issues which will effect them as they grow up into puberty. During year six the children forge links with the local high schools through a peer education system of teaching about puberty.

Each class also explore issues such as their environment in and around school, bullying and friendship through circle times, which are timetabled each week. They also undertake communities of enquiry to help develop their questioning and reasoning skills.

As a member of the Barnsley healthy schools scheme we cover five key areas these are: Health and safety, Sex and relationships, Drug education, healthy eating, school grounds. As a school we have held health days to promote the importance of being and staying healthy.

We have a healthy schools task group which meets once a term to discuss issues relating to the completion of the healthy scheme mark.
