History is taught throughout the school from ‘knowledge and understanding of our world’ in the Foundation Stage right up to Looking at the
Victorians in Year 6. Areas of study include learning about both individual historical figures such as Florence Nightingale in Year 2 and about periods from the past such as the Egyptians in Year 3 and the Greeks in Year
5. Through their study in history children are taught the many skills which will enable them to become successful and confident in investigation.
Teachers have enriched the history curriculum by planning for a wide range of visits to aid the children’s learning. Year 1 children experience a visit to
Cannon Hall as part of their learning about
houses from the past. Year 3 children have visited the Yorvik Viking Centre through their study of Invaders and Settlers, and as part of Year
5s learning about the Greeks the
children visit Barnsley town centre to look at Grecian architecture.
Year 6 have visited the National Coal
Mining Museum.
Historical days are also planned for in some year groups with children experiencing dressing in costume typical of the period being studied.
We are using the local environment as a
resource and some year groups are
studying coalmining in the local area.
In
Year 5 children experiencing a typical World War 2 day,
dressing in clothing appropriate for evacuation with gas masks
and suitcases and eating a traditional rationed meal prepared by the kitchen staff!
