Mathematics is a diverse and fascinating subject which affects all areas of our lives. In the broadest sense, Mathematics provides a means of analysing, organising, manipulating and communicating information.
If Mathematics is only about computational skills out of context, it cannot be justified in the curriculum. Elements of the subject include using number and measures, algebra, understanding shape and space, handling data, communicating ideas, applying knowledge and mathematical reasoning. These elements interrelate and ought to be developed alongside each other.
Mathematics is on the whole taught as a discrete subject, but where appropriate will be taught as part of a cross-curricular theme or in the context of another subject area.
We aim that our pupils will:
- Have a sense of the size of number and where that fits into the number system
- Know by heart facts such as number bonds, multiplication tables, doubles and halves
- Use what they know by heart to figure out answers mentally
- Calculate accurately and efficiently, both mentally and with paper, drawing on a range of calculation strategies
- Recognise when it is appropriate to use a calculator, and be able to do so effectively
- Make sense of number problems and recognise the operations needed to solve them
- Explain their methods and reasoning using correct mathematical terms
- Judge whether their answers are reasonable and have strategies for checking
- Suggest suitable units for measuring and make sensible estimates for measures; and
- Explain and make predictions from the numbers in graphs, diagrams, charts of tables.
